When I moved to the UK from Romania in 2010 at the age of 26, I carried with me dreams and expectations shaped by the stories I've seen in the movies. My understanding of the UK was built on a single story—a story that painted an idyllic picture of life in Britain.

I imagined a world where people spent their days visiting museums, speaking in posh accents, wearing fancy clothes, and sipping tea in elegant parlors. I believed that there is a lot of wealth, and that moving to the UK would be my ticket to a life of affluence and sophistication. However, the reality I encountered was starkly different, revealing the danger of the single story I had believed in.

Stereotypes I Faced

Upon my arrival, I quickly realised that just as I had a single story about the UK, many people in the UK had their own single story about me, a Romanian immigrant and more painfully Romanians had their single story about being a Romanian in UK. I faced a range of stereotypes and misconceptions:

  1. Economic Migrant: Many assumed I had come to the UK solely for economic reasons, viewing me as someone desperate to escape poverty and take advantage of the British welfare system.

  2. Low-Skilled Worker: There was a widespread belief that Romanian immigrants were only capable of low-skilled jobs, such as cleaning, construction, or agricultural work. What pissed me off the most was that romanians also really believed this and still believe it to this day.

  3. Criminality: Unfortunately, there was also a stereotype linking Romanian immigrants to criminal activities, a damaging narrative that painted us as untrustworthy or dangerous. This was made worse by special televised programs in UK about Romanians.

  4. Language Barrier: People often assumed I would struggle with English, expecting a heavy accent and poor communication skills. Well...My English was poor , but it rapidly improved. I still kept my strong accent thou.

These stereotypes overshadowed my true identity and experiences. I was not just an immigrant; I was a young woman with determination, dreams, talents, and a deep love for culture and learning.

Harsh Realities and New Understandings

My experiences in the UK began to challenge and expand my understanding. The reality was that many people did not fit the posh, museum-going, tea-drinking image I had in my mind. The UK was a diverse and complex society, with individuals from all walks of life facing their own struggles and joys.

I met people who were kind and welcoming, who saw beyond the stereotypes and valued me for who I was. I also encountered challenges and prejudices that tested my resilience and forced me to confront the simplistic views I held.

Embracing Multiple Stories

Over time, I learned to reject the single stories—both those I had believed about the UK and those others believed about me. I realised the importance of embracing multiple narratives to truly understand a place and its people.

I started to share my own story more openly, breaking down the stereotypes by showcasing the richness of my experiences and what it means to be a Romanian. I found that storytelling was a powerful tool to humanise and connect with others on a deeper level.

Conclusion

The danger of a single story lies in its ability to obscure the full picture and reduce individuals to simplistic caricatures. My journey from Romania to the UK taught me that we must seek out and share many stories to appreciate the complexity of our world and the people in it. By doing so, we regain a kind of paradise—a richer, more nuanced understanding of our shared humanity.
